Life of Pi

Life of Pi is a 2012 American adventure drama film based on Yann Martel's 2001 novel of the same name.

The film is about an Indian family. The main character, Pi, was named Piscine Molitor Patel after a swimming pool in France.

Pi is raised a Hindu, but he is introduced to Christianity and Islam during his teenage years, and starts to follow all three religions as he "just wants to love God."

His family owns a zoo and one day, the father is thinking to migrate to Canada and start a new life. Sadly, there was a storm and their ship capsized. The only survivor was Pi.

He gets stranded in a lifeboat after a shipwreck in which his family dies, with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. He then learned to live and survive on the sea.

After 227 days, the lifeboat washes up onto the coast of Mexico and Richard Parker immediately escapes into the nearby jungle.

This movie has a very good visual effect, which I like :) I almost thought that this movie was based on a true story....

Brave

This movie is funny :) It's about a princess, who doesn't act like a princess :)
She loves archery and horse riding.

What interesting from this movie is, she has different expectation from her mother. Her mother is a proper queen who taught her about the proper way to eat, to speak, to behave, etc. *reminds me a lot of my mum*

Then comes the challenges - argument with her mother, proposal from other clans, and a witch who is believed could change her fate. After that, the movie is quite interesting :)

I guess this movie shows another perspective of a princess, who is stubborn enough to follow her heart and brave enough to do what she thinks is right for her.

The signature of this movie is her hair. It's messy, yet lovely in color :)

One Day

This movie is starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. A love story between Dexter and Emma, who knew each other after their college graduation.

It shows us their lives on the same dates every year. Who knew, after almost 15 years, they still in love with each other.

Intermezzo:
Their story reminds me of one of Cecilia Ahern's books, titled "Where Rainbows End".

Anyway, it's a sweet love story with its ups and downs. Still quite relevant in our story nowadays, I think. There's no perfect person, so it is with love.

I'm actually quite moved, and got myself thinking of some people who had been in my life in the past. How are they doing now?

PROM

Have you watched this movie? I love it, haha....
It's simple, just like the title, it's all about PROM.

Honestly, I'm not that familiar with Prom, as we don't have that culture in Indonesia.
But I could understand the excitement of the last day in school :)

I like this movie because it's normal to happen everywhere. It brings back memories in Secondary and High School :) PDKT, jadi pemuja rahasia, pacaran sama bintang sekolah, dll dsb.

"Sometimes you think that you know a person very well, but actually you don't."

And she's got me thinking upside down
Talking backward out the wrong side of my mouth
Making promises that I can't keep
That's how I know
That I'm in deep

The Expendables 2

Oh wow. You gather all the action film actors, and here we go :)
They are incredible! There are more actors in the sequel of The Expendables, compared to the first movie.

Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Liam Hemsworth.

I was hoping that Liam Hemsworth could play longer, but no... he died quite early *sigh*. Probably because he's the youngest and to be the team member at least you should be 40years old? Haha... *kidding*
And oh, did you know that he's the brother of Chris Hemsworth (the THOR) and boyfriend of Miley Cyrus?? Hahaha....

Anyway, the story is good, but because there are so many good actors around, their actions are quite limited. Still, I enjoy watching it :) Bravo!!

Serendipity

Serendipity. It means a "happy accident" or "pleasant surprise".

The movie was in 2001, a love story between Kate Beckinsale (as Sara) and John Cusack (as Jonathan).

They met 5 days before Christmas, when they shopped Christmas gifts for their own girlfriend/boyfriend. And there was a chemistry between them!

They couldn't forget about each other even after few years, but they have their own partners and both are supposed to get married.

drama.. drama.. drama.... cos it's a movie anyway.

I actually enjoy the movie a lot! I love the plot :) but now I start to wonder, "could something like that happen in the real life?"

When it comes to love... even when you brain says no,
but if your heart wants it, usually heart always gets it.

Norwegian Wood

This book is highly recommended to all of you who are book lovers, especially if you like to read love stories. Haruki Murakami is an amazing writer, he's able to make me imagine every scene and situation in the book as if it's real.

The story took place in Japan, 1960s. It's about teenagers - Toru, Naoko, Midori, Kizuki, Nagasawa, and Hatsumi - who have to struggle with their family issues, relationship issues, and studies through their teenage lives.

It gave you pretty much a good idea of what's happening in Tokyo, Japan during 1960s. About college life, the studies and parties. Although my university life was different from the main role, Toru, but I could imagine what he had gone through.

Funny and weird people, those whom you could relate to, those who you don't understand their way of thinking, and those who you think always in their own world detached from reality. Being teenager is hard. I always think that teenagers are in the middle, neither here nor there.

When I read the book, I guess it never occurred to me that death of a loved one could affect someone tremendously. Well, I never had a close friend or relatives who attempted suicide, thankfully. But I could understand how life at times makes you feel that you just want to end it at one point.

I love the way Haruki Murakami describes people, their appearances and personalities; and also places. It was vivid, as if it's real.

I can't wait to watch the movie

Ps: The movie was good! But if you don't read the book, you may not fully understand the movie.

Snow White and The Huntsman

Film ini keren euy! Hehehe....

Snow White kabur, ketemu mahkluk-makhluk fairytale - peri, troll, rusa putih gede, dll.

Bayangkan gabungan film-film seperti: Narnia, Harry Potter, Avatar.

Dia keren banget! Walau jarang ngomong.

Lalu pemeran Huntsman-nya si Thor! Ueeehhh... cuakeeeeppppnyaaaaa :) :) :) Hahaha....
Awalnya sih aku demen sama temen si Snow White, namanya William. Tapi setelah nonton bagian tempur-tempur... waaahhh... kagum sama si Thor! Hehehee....

Ga ketinggalan si Nenek Sihir jahat, cuantiknyaaaa bukan main!

Keren deh ini film pokoknya :)

Madagascar

Ini film ke-3 Madagascar. Ada yang inget cerita dari film pertamanya? Aku udah lupa. Hahaha....

Ceritanya mereka ber-empat kangen sama "rumah", alias kebun binatang mereka di New York. Maka dimulailah petualangan mereka dari Madagascar menuju New York.

Hehehe....

The Avengers

Aku abis nonton film ini! Seru banget! Hahaha....

Ada Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, dan Hulk.
Pemerannya: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, daaannn Scarlett Johansson (sebagai Natasha Romanoff)!!
Beginilah kalo tokoh-tokoh keren digabung.

Tapiiii... aku suka sama si pemanah! Agent Barton alias Hawkeye, yang diperankan oleh Jeremy Renner.
Dia super keren banget!!

Well, selain aksi-aksi mereka yang keren... percakapan mereka juga layak disimak.

Contoh, ketika si Agent Romanoff ditelpon, dia lagi "kerja" sebagai mata-mata, dan ditunjukkan bagaimana dia beraksi melawan penjahat :)
Keren!!

Lalu percakapan yang lucu (menurutku):
Loki: What have I to fear?
Tony Stark: The Avengers. It's what we call ourselves, sort of like a team. "Earth's Mighiest Heroes" type thing.
Loki: Yes, I've met them.
Tony Stark: Yeah, takes us a while to get any traction, I'll give you that one. But let's do a head count here: your brother the demi-god; a super soldier, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend; a man with breath-taking anger management issues; a couple of master assassins, and YOU, big fella, you've managed to piss off every single one of them.
Loki: That was the plan.
Tony Stark: Not a great plan. When they come, and they WILL, they'll come for you.
Loki: I have an army.
Tony Stark: We have a Hulk.
Hahahaha....

Lalu ketika Loki bilang ma Hulk bahwa dia adalah dewa, si HULK tetep aja banting dia kanan kiri kanan kiri sampe muka Loki cengo....
HAHAHAHA!!!!

Film ini sangat menghibur :)

I think I don't mind watch it more than once.

Hello Ghost

Do you notice the main actor?
Yes, he's the one who played in "My Sassy Girl". Hahaha....

Sang Man is an orphan who has attempted to end his life several times, but always to no avail.
Since the failure of last attempt, he began to able to see 4 ghosts. These 4 ghosts are sharing his body. So basically, he has to do whatever any of them want to do.

You can actually watch this movie in Youtube.
Below is part of the movie that I found it very funny and self explanatory :)

Besides the funny part about being able to see ghost, this movie actually has family relationship value in it.

First of all, he was all alone, an orphan, who doesn't have any idea where he came from.
He was sad because nobody cares for him, and nobody to celebrate birthdays with him.

As the movie goes on, those ghosts actually keep him company and make him realised the importance of family relationship, and made him enjoy life.

This is almost the end part of the movie, and it's very touching.

Moral of the movie: you are not alone in this world.
There is a reason for you to live, and there is always someone who cares for you.
But first, you have to care about yourself and be grateful about your life, no matter how hard it is.

The Vow

I love Channing Tatum Since he played in Step Up. I have been watching some of his movies since then, such as: GI Joe, Dear John, and Coach Carter (just noticed he was in that movie too! Haha)

This is a Love Story movie :)

Paige (Rachel McAdams) lost her memories due to car accident. She only remembered until 5 years ago. Sadly, she doesn't remember anything about her husband, Leo (Channing Tatum). Leo was trying hard to fight for her love, and their life back as husband and wife.

I am touched by the love that they share together,
the commitment which took place in good times and bad times,
and both parties actually try to do their best to regain the memory back.

What if your loved one, or someone who is dear to you, suddenly lost his/her memory and forget about you?

It's hard to accept the fact that we are forgotten..
that precious moments we used to have together, suddenly only belongs to you and you can't share with the other person anymore.

I guess I too, will try my best to make the person remember me again.
But if not, I'll do my best to accept the person, as who she/he is now.

It's a beautiful movie to watch :)

I vow to help you love life.
To always hold you with tenderness,
and to have the patience that love demands.
To speak when words are needed,
and to share the silence when they're not.
To agree, to disagree, on red velvet cake.
And to live within warmth of your heart,
and always call it home.
- Paige

The Way

"You don't choose a life, you live one."

I watched this movie on my way back to Singapore. The old ancient pilgrimage journey The Way of St James.

I was interested because the title caught me. "The Way."

From a pilgrimage journey of Taylor, Emilio Estevez's own son, he discussed it with his father, Martin Sheen, to make a movie about the journey.

This movie is the collaboration of Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen to honour the Camino de Santiago and promote the traditional pilgrimage.
(Wikipedia)

It's a story about a father, whose son was killed on his journey while traveling the "El camino de Santiago". He then decided to continue the journey on behalf of his son. Along his journey, he got to meet some interesting people, with whom he then went for the journey together.

For me, this movie speaks a lot about family, relationship, and our own personal growth.
In this lives, we have our Cross to carry. We have our personal reasons to go for a pilgrimage trip.
At the end, whoever we meet, whichever way we go, we will find ourselves.

There are 5 characters in this movie. The father, the son, the Dutch guy, the Canadian Lady, and an Irish guy.
The Dutch guy who has a friendly personality, who just goes along with the journey. He was not in rush.
The Canadian Lady, someone who has a desire to finish the journey, but keeps procrastinating on the process.
The Irish guy, a writer who tries to find his courage in writing.
The father, is someone who feels guilty and wants to relive the moments with his son. So he traveled the same journey, to find his son.
The son, someone who inspires people, who has a dream, who wants to make a different in life and wants to create his own story, but sadly couldn't finish his journey.

We are not alone in this life,
there's always others to accompany us, whether in short or long term
and we have to make the best of our journey :)

Battleship

We decided to watch this movie in short notice. It was unplanned. But it was a good movie :)
From the title, you can guess that this movie is about war.

The movie was directed by Peter Berg and stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, Liam Neeson, and Tadanobu Asano.

It started with a guy (Alex Hopper) who celebrated his 26th birthday but didn't have a stable job.
He is a guy who just follows his instinct and very bad in decision-making. He was childish, but he has a good heart and a lot of potential. So, he was enrolled in Navy by his brother to do something good and beneficial for him.

In the mean time, there were some researchers who wanted to send signals to other planets to see if there is another planet that we could live in. Apparently, it was a bad idea. The signal was received, and in turn, they came to the earth with an army.

Back to the navy, while they were in the sea, there were 5 strange things landed on the sea. Navy tried to attack, and 2 out of 3 ships lost to the alien ship. Alex's brother was one of them who died.

That incident, made Alex the most senior navy, who had to make decision for others on how to attack this alien. Alex was scared, realised that he is now in charge of people's lives.

Throughout this battle, there are some points to learn:
1) We need others. We can't do a battle alone, we will lose.
2) We need strategy. Think before act. Think of others.
3) Trust must be earned. You have to prove that you can be trusted. It is not something that is given freely.
4) Maximising potential. If you know what you are good at, something that you can do, you have to do it!

About the stars:
Taylor Kitsch, the main actor, is the one who plays as John Carter.
Oh my... he is so handsome! Hahahaha....
I can't believe that Brooklyn Decker is only 25 years old and has married for 3 years!
Liam Neeson... there's no need to describe him as he is as always, awesome :)
And Rihanna, she was cool! She could act pretty well! :)
Oh yes, last but not least, there is Peter MacNicol who plays a small part as the Secretary of USA.

I enjoy watching this movie :)

Fully Human Fully Alive

This book is written to make us understand better about the world, about our vision, about "insight", perception, misconception, and awareness.

What is reality?
"Two men looked out from prison bars.
One saw mud, one saw stars."

Five essential steps into the fullness of life:
1) to accept oneself - be gentle with yourself (Desiderata)
2) to be oneself - we are free to have and to report our emotions, ideas, and preferences
3) to forget oneself in loving - genuine caring and concern for others
"There is no learning to live without learning to love"
4) to believe - to discover meaning in our lives
5) to belong - a sense of community, to be "for" one another.

Normal Day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me learn from you, savor you, bless you,
before you depart.
(Mary Jean Irion)

This book explains to me the characters of people
who are fully alive
who are receptive to changes
and always say "YES" to life and love.

Emotions are always the result of a given perception and interpretation.
There should be quiet times in every life for such reflection, reevaluation, and reinterpretation.

All of us have to find some purpose or mission in life which will confer upon us a sense of personal distinction and worth. We need to believe that our lives will make a different for someone or for something.

God says: I will be with you to
illuminate your darkness,
strengthen your weakness,
fill your emptiness,
heal your brokenness,
cure your sickness,
straighten what may be bent in you,
revive whatever good things may have died in you.

Remember that you are a pilgrim.
Your destiny is eternal life.

Thanks be to God :)
Be blessed!

Mary of Nazareth

Buku "Mary of Nazareth" karangan Marek Halter ini menceritakan tentang Mary, jauh sebelum ia menerima kabar gembira dari malaikat Gabriel. Cerita dimulai sejak 6 tahun sebelum Masehi, ketika Mary masih tinggal bersama kedua orang tuanya.

"Layaknya sebuah kisah yang mengubah nasib dunia, buku ini mengandung kemegahan sejarah yang ditulis dengan intensitas mengagumkan sampai masuk ke dalam alam pikiran karakter-karakternya. Sebuah epik yang tak boleh dilewatkan."
(Andrea Hirata, Penulis Tetralogi Laskar Pelangi)

Sep 05, 2010 - review by Wellington:

Making a departure from my non-fiction reading, I picked up a historical novel about the most famous mother of all time.

The story starts out with Miriam and her family struggling to survive the yoke of the tyrannical Roman rule under King Herod. By a freak accident, Miriam's father is set to be crucified. The precocious Miriam boldly sets out to rescue him with the help of a dangerous friend, Barrabas.

It's a crisp book that doesn't weight the soul down with diatribes of heavy handed preaching. OK, there are a couple of them but most of the story focused on Miriam and how she became the Virgin Mary.

At the end, the author tacked on the Gospel of Mary which will never find its way to the Bible that you know because according to her, Jesus faked his death like Juliet. You would think that one of the two people who first found Jesus alive might be the authority on the matter.

Now, the book probably took a lot of liberties to tell the story. But who is to say history has not taken their own liberties?

John Carter

Temen: "Van, nonton film John Carter yuk."
Aku:
Film apaaa lagi itu... iklannya sih dimana-mana, tapi kok aku ga tertarik buat nonton -.-

setelah nonton trailer...

Aku: "Yaa.. boleh... ayuk." Sapa tahu menarik.

Setelah nonton filmnya...
Wuihhh... keren!! Hahahaa....

This movie is based on the novel "A Princess of Mars".

It pictured a life of a young man back in 1882. This young man, 15 years before (1868) has traveled to Mars and lived there. This movie tells the story of his life when he was in Mars.

It was entertaining to imagine, what if we could live in Mars :)
The language, the people, and the condition of the planet are different.

The title of the novel has spoken, it has something to do with a princess of Mars.
Yes, he fell in love with the princess of Mars :) Disney ohhh... Disney.

To cut the long story short, he needed to go back to Mars because he was sent back to Earth.

My take away from this movie is that, we need to belong to something. It could be a place, or people, or someone dear in our heart. That's where our home is. We need to fight for our own happiness, and bring happiness to others as much as we could.

It's important to be a people-centered person because we live in a society. We need others, and vice versa.

Called and Chosen

"There is only one vocation, it's vocation to Love."
(Father Anthony Kenny Tan)
For many are called but few are chosen.
(Matthew 22:14)

This book reveals 17 vocation stories of our beloved Priests.
My friend passed me this book 2 years ago, which at that time, I did not have time to read it.

"The priestly vocation is a gift from God."
(Pope John Paul II)

After reading their stories... I am able to understand more about vocation.
Each of the priest is special, and they were called in special way, because God knows them best.

There is also ups and downs, struggles, failures and even decision to leave the priesthood in the early stage. But as they grow in faith and faith is what keeps them going... they are still here, as priests, to serve the people.

The Calling.

You may wonder, "How does it feel to be called?"
"How do you know you are called?"

Well, I'd like to suggest you to go and see a priest, or religious Sister (if you are a woman) to seek for Spiritual Guidance if you are discerning about these questions because it's not easy to be convinced that you are called.

Most of the time, one who is called would felt something and felt the need to share the strange (yet peaceful) feeling with someone who one thinks might understood and able to give some guidance. Therefore, seek help from a religious Sister or Brother or Priest might be helpful since they have been through it before.

I like the sharing from Father Joachim Chang,
"Marriage is also a vocation, but how many of us would spend eight days in the retreat centre to discern and ensure that we are called to be married and ensure the person we are planning to marry is the right one?
But when it comes to the priesthood, we must make 10 retreats, check with everyone and must make sure we do not make a mistake. There is a double standard here."

"Even if God were calling a person to the priesthood and if that person decided to get married instead, God would still bless his marriage. However, he may not be as happy as he would have been if he had accepted the calling to become a priest."

May God bless our Priests, religious Brothers and Sisters :)

HUGO

Hugo Cabret is an orphan. He lives in the walls of a train station.

His dad used to own a watched shop and he taught him how to fix watch. After his dad passed away, his uncle took him to stay with him in a train station and his only job is to make sure that the clock is working.

Before he died, his father left an automaton (a mechanical man who is supposed to write with a pen). He was trying to fix it and to find out what the automaton could do. Hugo tried so hard to find the missing pieces of the automaton because he was convinced that the automaton contains a message from his father. Also, he thought by fixing the automaton he won't feel so lonely anymore.

His journey involved some people whom he met daily. One person led to another, and from little pieces of puzzle slowly Hugo understands about his father's dream, people's dreams, and the history of the movie theater.
I guess for myself, again I learn about letting go of the past, accepting what life has given me, and treasure the people who care about me.
Hugo said,
"I imagine that the world is one big machine. Machines don’t have any extra parts. They have just as many parts as they need. By seeing the world as a machine, I can see myself as having a place in it. I must have a purpose, if the world is like a machine!"

So I guess, there is no such thing as a coincidence.
Everything, and everyone, has its own purpose. Things happen for a reason :)

Another great movie :)

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

I was interested to watch this movie because:
1) Academy Award Nominees
2) Best Movie of the year - People
3) Tom Hanks & Sandra Bullock are in this movie

It is based on a novel by Jonathan Safran Foer.

This movie is about a boy named Oskar, whose father died in the 9/11 tragedy. Oskar describes the day as "The Worst Day". Oskar is very close with his father. They used to do a lot of things together as father and son.

This movie is Oskar's story; his perception of "The Worst Day", memories about his dad, the struggle, grief, and motivation to find out what's left of his dad just so he can remember him longer.

On "The Worst Day", Oskar was released from school earlier, he went home but nobody was around. His father called and left messages in the answering machine since there's no one answered the phone. Oskar was too scared to pick up the phone, and felt guilty later on because he didn't pick up the phone. He kept the phone with all the messages so nobody will need to hear it like he did.
Learn to let go, to accept the tragedy, and to move on with your life are the messages of this movie.
This is a movie about family.
Oskar came from a good family background, good family support. His parents are loving, and he even gets closer to his granny after his dad passed away. During his journey, he was also involved with his grandpa, with whom he receives support and learns to accept other's limitation.

If you see it from different perspective, this movie is also showing how strong his mum is.
She needs to survive for Oskar, to support him, and to accept him despite how he reacts about the loss of his dad.

There was one conversation between Oskar and his mum which left a very deep impression in my heart:
Oskar: "I wish you were in that building instead of him."
She responds, "So do I."
Oskar: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it."
She responds, "Yes, you did."
My heart was very sad to hear that particular conversation. Imagine that your own son prefers your spouse and wishes that you were the one who died and refuses to accept the reality. She has a very big heart to answer him calmly, and yet still love him with all her heart.

Great movie!

Ps:
*Highly recommended to watch.
*You may find more about the movie from Wikipedia, and the movie's website.

My Stupid Boss

This book is hilarious!

loh, kok jadi curhat?

Buku ini sangat menghibur. Apalagi peribahasanya yang sangat cocok:
Bersakit-sakit di gue,
Bersenang-senang di elo!
Anyway, buku pertamanya laris manis, jadi aku belum baca. Tapi udah beli buku 2-4, hahaha....

Will I recommend this book?
Definitely YES! :) :)

Ps:
Penulis punya blog, silakan kunjungi di sini.

White Vengeance

Intermezzo:
I watched this movie with my parents and brother in the night of CNY eve. What a movie to welcome CNY. Hahaha....

This movie tells a story of two sworn brothers, Liu Bang and Xiang Yu. Somehow, perhaps to make it more dramatic, both of them fell in love with the same woman, Yu Ji.
Xiang Yu and Liu Bang are close friends who both serve King Huai of Chu. King Huai uses a plot, saying that whoever can subvert the Qin kingdom in Guanzhong would be the Lord Qin, in order to benefit from the competition between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang.
Here comes the conflict, both of them would like to be the Lord Qin. Because Liu Bang had a chance to invade Guanzhong first when most of Qin army is outside fighting against Xiang Yu's army, Xiang Yu is furious & felt betrayed when he found out. So they arranged a Banquet, to have a direct confrontation.

In the end of this movie, Liu Bang told his ex-advisor, Zhang Liang, that he had lost trust to everyone. He is scared that everyone is trying to kill him and take away his throne one day, because he had betrayed the ones who trusted him.

Sad movie, really.

Courageous

Courageous is a Christian movie.
They talk about the Lord, about praying, about God, and about promise.

Courageous is a family movie.
...but as for me and my house, we will serve THE LORD.
(Joshua 24:15)

This movie talks about the lives of four men, as police officers.
About what they encounter each day, about their job, about their responsibilities, and about the reality today.

This movie has moved me.
Because these four men (actually five at the end), had shown their courage in their daily lives, working place and family setting - their role as fathers, as the man in the family, and as a husband.

After watching this movie, I texted some of my friends, saying:
"Courageous is a GREAT movie!!"
Hahaha....

Again, highly recommended to watch!! :) :) :)

5 Languages of Appreciation at Work

Do you know about 5 Love Languages?
Well, this book is actually talking about our love language, in workplace setting.

There are basically 5 languages of appreciation: 1) Quality Time; 2) Words of Affirmation; 3) Act of Service; 4) Tangible Gifts; and 5) Physical Touch.

In a workplace setting, Quality Time means that the person likes to have a sharing session. People who spend their time just to listen to him/her.

While Words of Affirmation means that the person wants to be appreciated in words. People who spend time to talk to him/her, to give the feedback and compliment.

Act of Service means that the person wants other to help him/her do the job.

Tangible gifts means the person like to get an award, a little appreciation gift, such as coupon, ticket, etc.

Last but not least, physical touch could mean a little high five, pats on the back, firm shake hand....

The author gave such a good example about this language of appreciation:
If you are thirsty, and someone offers you a place to sit, it's nice and thoughtful, but it doesn't satisfy your needs.

The research shows most of the people resign from their job because they do not feel appreciated.
